Vending Machine Cleaning: Why Is It So Important?

Because it plays such a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of your staff and the public, vending machine cleaning is a legal requirement.

You might place vending machine cleaning near the bottom of your list of priorities. After all, the products contained within vending machines is often chilled and preserved, so it’s not as though there’s a pressing need to ensure they’re kept clean, right?

Wrong. Vending machines are subject to exactly the same food hygiene legislation as any other food preparation area. Specifically, vending machine cleaning is governed by Chapter III, Annex II, of Regulation (EC) 852/2004. This regulation is often referred to as the Guide to Good Practice in the Vending Industry.

The fact is, even those vending machines that distribute chilled drinks and snacks, as opposed to the likes of hot food or fresh coffee, will require regular cleaning and maintenance. In all machinery, dirt, dust, and grease will inevitably build up over time. Vending machines are no exception, and food will often remain in these machines for long periods of time. This means that even if items are properly chilled and preserved, they may still be exposed to potentially harmful particles.

On top of that, some vending machines dispense hot drinks. Think of the lime scale in your kettle. Such mineral deposits can also build up in your heated vending machines. Professional vending machine cleaning will not only counter this health risk, it will also ensure that your heated vending machines will always dispense fresh and great tasting drinks.

An Additional Benefit of Vending Machine Cleaning

Beyond the health risks and the legal requirements, there are other reasons to engage in regular vending machine cleaning.

We’ve already mentioned how dirty heated vending machines can result in poor tasting tea, coffee, and chocolate. Similarly, if chilled vending machines are not regularly cleaned, they may become less efficient at keeping food and drink cool, as dusty or greasy refrigeration coils have to work much harder to do their jobs.

If your staff are drinking unpleasantly warm cans, or slightly melted chocolate – and if their afternoon snacks are covered in dust – employee satisfaction will plummet. Vending machine cleaning will not only keep your staff healthy. It will also keep them happy.

Finally, apart from anything else, dirty vending machines are unsightly. You wouldn’t let the rest of your office furniture accumulate dust and grease, so you should also endeavour to keep on top of vending machine cleaning.
